This is the opening sequence from the feature film Across the Universe (2007), directed by Julie Taymor. It uses a combination of stop-motion composited with footage from the film and ocean waves.
To create this animation, we decided to build “waves” out of newspaper and wire, which we could then stop-motion animate "puppet" newspaper waves mimicking a crashing motion.
By using After Effects, we then composited ocean

footage and staged riot scenes the film onto the stop-motion newspaper waves.
Kyle Cooper (Owner and Creative Director at Prologue Films where most of the animated sequences were executed) directed the animated sequences throughout the film along with Julie Taymor.
Kyle Cooper, Katie Lee, and myself came up with the concept for this sequence. Katie Lee and I executed the sequence.
